Meaning

The Ganeshwar-Jodhpura culture was a Chalcolithic culture of the Khetri area in Rajasthan. Chalcolithic means people used copper along with stone. Khetri is rich in copper ore. This culture had its own non-Harappan pottery and an unusual wealth of copper objects. It matters because its people probably supplied copper to the Harappans, which shows trade links between the cities and the people around them.

Example

At Ganeshwar (Khetri area, Rajasthan), large numbers of copper arrowheads, fish-hooks, axes and other objects have been found. This points to a local centre of copper working.

Don't confuse with

  • Harappan civilisation: the Harappans used copper but lived in planned cities. The Ganeshwar-Jodhpura people were a separate regional culture with different pottery.
