Ganweriwala

History glossary

Topic: Harappan (Sindhu-Sarasvati) Civilisation · NCERT: Class 6, Ch 6 "The Beginnings of Indian Civilisation"; Class 12, Ch 1 "Bricks, Beads and Bones"

Meaning

Ganweriwala is one of the five major cities of the Harappan Civilisation. The other four are Rakhigarhi, Mohenjo-daro, Harappa and Dholavira. It lies in the Cholistan desert in Pakistan, along the dry Ghaggar-Hakra river, which the NCERTs identify with the Ṛig Vedic Sarasvatī. Its location shows that the Sarasvatī basin, and not just the Indus valley, was a heartland of Harappan cities.

Example

The Sarasvatī basin holds two of the five Harappan cities, Rakhigarhi in Haryana and Ganweriwala in Cholistan. By c. 1800 BCE most sites in Cholistan had been abandoned, and people moved towards Gujarat, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh.

Don't confuse with

  • Rakhigarhi: Rakhigarhi is the other big Sarasvatī-basin city. It is in Haryana, India, and it is the largest Harappan site (550 ha).
