Meaning

George Chinnery was a British painter who lived and worked in India from c. 1802 to 1825. He painted portraits of officials and wealthy people. He also made landscapes and drawings of everyday life in villages. His pictures are useful visual records of the Bengal countryside in the early colonial period.

Example

Chinnery made sketches and paintings of Bengal village scenes in c. the 1810s–1820s. They show huts, ponds, cattle and village life. Historians use them as pictures of rural Bengal around the time of the Permanent Settlement. But they must be read with care, since they show the countryside as a European artist saw it.
