History glossary

Also called: Senji · Topic: The Marathas · NCERT: Class 8, Ch 3 "The Marathas"

Meaning

Gingee (also Senji) is a hill fortress in present-day Tamil Nadu. Shivaji captured it in 1677 during his dakshina-digvijaya, or conquest of the South. It became very important after Shivaji's death. With Raigad lost to the Mughals, it was the Marathas' refuge. Because of it, the Mughal–Maratha war spread into south India. It is part of UNESCO's Maratha Military Landscapes World Heritage site.

Example

Aurangzeb executed Sambhaji and captured Raigad. Rajaram then fled to Gingee. He held out there through a long Mughal siege (1690–98). Meanwhile the Marathas kept fighting in the Deccan.

Don't confuse with
