Meaning

Guru Angad was the second Sikh Guru. He lived from 1504 to 1552, and his birth name was Lehna. Guru Nanak chose him as his successor ahead of his own sons. This began a line of ten Gurus that lasted nearly 200 years. Guru Angad is credited with developing and popularising the Gurmukhi script. He wrote down Guru Nanak's hymns in it, which helped keep the Guru's teachings safe.

Example

At Khadur Sahib in Punjab, Guru Angad collected Guru Nanak's hymns in the Gurmukhi script. These hymns later became part of the Guru Granth Sahib, which Guru Arjan first compiled.

Don't confuse with

  • Guru Arjan: Guru Angad wrote Guru Nanak's hymns in Gurmukhi. Guru Arjan, the fifth Guru, first compiled them into the Guru Granth Sahib.
