Henry Ford
Also called: Ford · Topic: The Making of a Global World · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 3 "The Making of a Global World"
Meaning
Henry Ford (1863–1947) was an American car maker. He introduced mass production, meaning making huge numbers of the same product quickly and cheaply. He copied the assembly line of a Chicago slaughterhouse for his car factory in Detroit. On an assembly line, each worker does one task again and again as the product moves past. His methods helped start the mass production and mass buying of goods in the USA in the 1920s.
Example
Ford's T-Model was the world's first mass-produced car, and a new one came off the line every three minutes. Workers found the fast pace too tiring and many left. So in January 1914 Ford doubled the daily wage to 5 dollars, but he banned trade unions.
