Hiriya canal
Topic: Vijayanagara and the Deccan · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 3 "An Imperial Capital: Vijayanagara"
Meaning
The Hiriya canal is the most prominent waterwork in the ruins of Vijayanagara (Hampi). It seems to have been built by the kings of the Sangama dynasty (1336–1485). The capital lay in one of the driest parts of the peninsula, so storing and moving water was essential.
Example
The Hiriya canal drew water from a dam across the Tungabhadra river. It watered the farmed valley between the "sacred centre" and the "urban core". This belt of fields lay inside the city walls, which helped the city survive a siege.
Don't confuse with
- Kamalapuram tank: it was a tank (a reservoir), built in the early 15th century. It watered nearby fields and sent water by channel to the "royal centre". The Hiriya canal took its water from the river.
