Meaning
Hiroshima and Nagasaki are two Japanese cities on which the USA dropped atomic bombs in August 1945, at the end of the Second World War. The bombs killed huge numbers of people at once, and many more died later from radiation sickness. Japan surrendered soon after. Historians still disagree about the bombings. Some say they shortened the war. Others say the suffering they caused was unnecessary.
Example
The USA dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima on 6 August 1945 and a second on Nagasaki on 9 August 1945. Japan's defeat led to the US-led Occupation, which demilitarised the country and gave it a new constitution.
