Topic: Paths to Modernisation: Japan, China, Korea · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Hundred Days' Reform was a short burst of reform in China in 1898. The young Guangxu Emperor, advised by Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao, issued orders to modernise the Qing state, covering education, administration, the army and the economy. Conservatives at court opposed the changes. After about a hundred days, Empress Dowager Cixi took back power and stopped the reforms.
Example
In September 1898, Cixi's coup put the Guangxu Emperor under house arrest. Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao had to flee to Japan.
Don't confuse with
- Self-Strengthening Movement (1860s–1890s): It copied only Western weapons and industry. The 1898 reform also tried to change institutions, such as schools and the way the government was run.
