Ibn Juzayy
Topic: Medieval India through Travellers' Eyes · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 1 "Through the Eyes of Travellers"
Meaning
Ibn Juzayy was the scholar who wrote down Ibn Battuta's travel stories. When Ibn Battuta returned home to Morocco in 1354, the ruler ordered his stories to be recorded. Ibn Battuta dictated them (spoke them aloud) and Ibn Juzayy wrote them in Arabic. The result was the Rihla ("journey"), which was meant both to educate and to entertain readers.
Example
The Rihla, written down by Ibn Juzayy in the mid-14th century, preserves Ibn Battuta's descriptions of Delhi under Muhammad bin Tughlaq. These include the city's 28 gates and the postal system. Because of this, Ibn Juzayy's role matters: parts of the wording and arrangement of the Rihla are his, not Ibn Battuta's alone.
Don't confuse with
- Ibn Battuta: he was the traveller who made the journeys (1304–77). Ibn Juzayy only recorded and shaped the account.
