Ibn Sina
Also called: Avicenna · Topic: Renaissance, Reformation and the Scientific Revolution · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 5 "Changing Cultural Traditions"
Meaning
Ibn Sina (980–1037), known in Latin as Avicenna, was a physician (doctor) and philosopher from Bukhara in Central Asia. He was one of the Muslim 'men of wisdom' whom Italian scholars admired. His work shows how much European learning owed to scholars of the Islamic world.
Example
Ibn Sina's great medical book, the Canon of Medicine, was followed in Europe for centuries. His Latin name, Avicenna, made later generations wrongly think he was a European.
Don't confuse with
- Ibn Rushd (Averroes): a philosopher from Spain who tried to reconcile philosophy with religious belief. Ibn Sina is linked with Bukhara and medicine.
- al-Razi (Rhazes): another Muslim physician, known for writing a medical encyclopaedia.
