Jalaluddin Khalji
Also called: Jalaluddin Firuz Khalji · Topic: Turkic Invasions and the Delhi Sultanate · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Jalaluddin Khalji founded the Khalji dynasty, the second dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate. He took the throne in 1290 and ended the rule of the Mamluk (Slave) dynasty. Until then, a small group of Turkish nobles had held the top posts. Jalaluddin's rise opened power to a wider group, and historians call this change the "Khalji revolution". He was old when he became king and ruled in a mild, forgiving way. His nephew and son-in-law, Alauddin, killed him in 1296 and took the throne.
Example
In 1296, Alauddin came back rich from his raid on Devagiri in the Deccan. He invited Jalaluddin to meet him at Kara, near the Ganga, and had him murdered there.
Don't confuse with
- Alauddin Khalji: Alauddin was the nephew who killed him. Alauddin, not Jalaluddin, carried out the great conquests, the market reforms and the wars against the Mongols.
