History glossary

Also called: July Revolution of 1830 · Topic: The Rise of Nationalism in Europe · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 1 "The Rise of Nationalism in Europe"

Meaning

The July Revolution was a rising in Paris in July 1830. It overthrew the Bourbon kings, the old royal family that the Treaty of Vienna had brought back to power in 1815. In their place came a constitutional monarchy under Louis Philippe. A constitutional monarchy means a king whose powers are limited by a constitution. The revolution matters because it encouraged liberals and nationalists in other parts of Europe.

Example

After the revolution, the Austrian chancellor Metternich said: "When France sneezes, the rest of Europe catches cold." Soon afterwards people rose up in Brussels, and Belgium broke away from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Don't confuse with

  • The February Revolution of 1848: in 1848 Louis Philippe himself fled Paris and a Republic was declared. The 1830 revolution was the one that had put him on the throne.
