Kanaganahalli
Also called: Sannati · Topic: Early Indian Art and Architecture: Stupas, Rock-cut Caves, Temples · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Kanaganahalli is a Buddhist site on the Bhima river in Kalaburagi district, Karnataka. It is close to Sannati, so the two names often appear together. Its large stupa had carved stone slabs. One slab shows a king with his queens, labelled Raya Asoko, which means "King Ashoka". It is one of the very few labelled carvings of Ashoka. It matters because it shows how people in the Deccan remembered the Mauryan emperor long after his death.
Example
The Raya Asoko panel at Kanaganahalli, from the Satavahana period (c. 1st century BCE–1st century CE), shows Ashoka standing with his queens. A Brahmi label names him.
Don't confuse with
- Ashoka's own edicts: these are messages Ashoka himself had carved. The Kanaganahalli panel is a later carving of him, made by others.
