Meaning
The Keshava temple is a Vishnu temple at Somanathapura, near Mysuru in Karnataka. It was built in 1268 by Somanatha, a general of the Hoysala king Narasimha III. It has three shrines and stands on a star-shaped platform, a typical Hoysala feature. It is one of the three Hoysala temples on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Example
The temple's three shrines, set around one hall, show the late, highly ornate Hoysala style of the 13th century.
Don't confuse with
- Chennakeshava temple, Belur: an earlier Hoysala Vishnu temple, built by King Vishnuvardhana in 1117. The Somanathapura temple was built by a general, not a king, in 1268.
