Khond uprisings
Also called: Kandha revolt · Topic: Peasant and Tribal Resistance under Company Rule · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Khond uprisings were revolts by the Khonds (also called Kandhas), a tribal people of the hills of Odisha. They lasted from about 1837 to 1856. The British tried to stop meriah, a Khond ritual of human sacrifice, and they also brought new taxes and outsiders into Khond lands. The Khonds saw all of this as an attack on their customs and freedom. The revolt shows that colonial "reform" could also feel like conquest.
Example
Chakra Bisoi led the Khonds of the Ghumsur hills in Odisha against British forces. He kept up the resistance for years and was never captured.
