Kot Diji
Topic: Harappan (Sindhu-Sarasvati) Civilisation · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Kot Diji is a site in Sindh, Pakistan, on the east bank of the Indus. It had a fortified settlement before the Harappan cities arose. Its people used a pottery style, called "Kot Dijian," that is found widely in the region. This style leads directly into Mature Harappan pottery. So Kot Diji shows that the cities grew out of earlier local cultures.
Example
The pre-Harappan town at Kot Diji had a wall of stone and mud brick. Its top early layer shows signs of a large fire. After that, a Mature Harappan settlement was built at the site. Who caused the fire is not known.
Don't confuse with
- Amri: Amri is also a Sindh site with layers from before and during the Harappan period. It is known for "Amri ware" pottery, not for an early fortified town and a burnt layer.
