Meaning

Kumaramatya was the title of a group of high-ranking officers in Gupta government. They worked both at the king's court and in the provinces and districts. The post grew out of the older amatyas (ministers and officials) described by Kautilya, but it covered a wider range of jobs. In some families the office was passed from father to son. This shows how local power could slowly gather in the hands of particular families.

Example

Harisena, who wrote Samudragupta's Prayaga Prashasti, was a kumaramatya. He also held other high posts. Clay seals found at Vaishali (Bihar) mention offices of kumaramatyas, which shows that the title was common in daily administration.

Don't confuse with

  • Amatya (Mauryan): in Kautilya's Arthashastra, this was a general term for ministers and officials. The kumaramatya was a specifically Gupta officer group.
  • Samanta: a local lord who supported himself from his own land, not a salaried officer of the king.
