Meaning

Marianne is the female figure that stands for the French nation and Republic. She is an allegory, which means an abstract idea shown as a person. Her name was a popular Christian name. That choice stressed that the nation belonged to ordinary people. She carries the signs of Liberty and the Republic: the red cap, the tricolour and the cockade (a rosette of ribbon in the national colours). She mattered because she reminded citizens every day that they belonged to one nation.

Example

In 19th-century France, statues of Marianne were set up in public squares. Her image was also printed on coins and stamps, so people saw the symbol of national unity all the time.

Don't confuse with

  • Germania: she stands for Germany. She wears a crown of oak leaves and carries a sword wrapped in an olive branch, not the red cap of Liberty.
  • Britannia: she stands for Britain. In imperial maps she sits on top of the globe as a symbol of empire.
