Meaning

The rajukas were senior Mauryan officials who worked in the countryside. Their name probably comes from rajju, a rope used to measure land. They first dealt with land measurement and later also handled justice. Ashoka gave them independent power to reward and punish people, so they did not have to wait for orders from above. He wanted them to be fair and to care for the people, the way a trusted nurse cares for a child. They show how Ashoka tried to bring fair justice to rural people.

Example

In Pillar Edict IV (3rd century BCE), Ashoka says he has given the rajukas independent authority over rewards and punishments. He also tells them to make sure judgements and punishments are the same for everyone.

Don't confuse with

  • Dhamma mahamattas: special officers Ashoka appointed to spread dhamma among all sects. Rajukas were mainly in charge of land and justice.
