Meaning

Rakhal Das Banerji, also called R.D. Banerji, was an Indian archaeologist of the Archaeological Survey of India. In 1922, at Mohenjo-daro in Sindh, he found seals like those from Harappa in Punjab. The two sites are hundreds of kilometres apart. The match suggested that both belonged to one archaeological culture, which was the first hint of how big the civilisation was.

Example

Banerji's Mohenjo-daro seals of 1922 were compared with Daya Ram Sahni's Harappa finds of 1921. Together, they led John Marshall to announce a new civilisation in 1924. Marshall was said to have "left India three thousand years older than he had found her".

Don't confuse with

  • Daya Ram Sahni: Sahni excavated Harappa in 1921. Banerji worked at Mohenjo-daro from 1922.
