Rangpur
Topic: Harappan (Sindhu-Sarasvati) Civilisation · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Rangpur is a Harappan site in Gujarat, in the Saurashtra region. It is known for a long Late Harappan sequence, which shows how life went on after the great cities declined (c. 1900–1300 BCE). It also matters because rice husks (the outer covering of rice grains) were found here.
Example
Rice husks found at Rangpur show that rice was known in Harappan Gujarat. But across Harappan sites as a whole, rice was rare. Wheat and barley stayed the main grains. In the Late Harappan phase, Gujarat sites like Rangpur continued as rural settlements, without seals, writing or long-distance trade.
Don't confuse with
- Lothal: Lothal is also in Gujarat. It is famous for its dockyard, fire altar and bead-making drills, not for the Late Harappan sequence that Rangpur is known for.
