Razmnama
Also called: Book of War · Topic: The Mughal Empire: Babur to Aurangzeb · NCERT: Class 8, Ch 2 "Reshaping India's Political Map"
Meaning
The Razmnama ("Book of War") is the Persian translation of the Mahabharata. It was made in Akbar's house of translation (Maktab Khana) at Fatehpur Sikri, c. 1580s. The scholars who worked on it included Naqib Khan and Badauni. Court artists illustrated it richly with Mughal miniature paintings. It shows Akbar's wish to bring Indian epics and thought to his Persian-reading court.
Example
The Razmnama was one of several Sanskrit works translated at Fatehpur Sikri. The others included the Ramayana, illustrated with 176 miniature paintings, the Bhagavad Gita and the Panchatantra.
Don't confuse with
- Hamzanama: a set of paintings on the adventures of Amir Hamza, a Persian-Islamic hero. It is not a translation of an Indian epic.
