Sari
Topic: India, That Is Bharat: Names of India and Unity in Diversity · NCERT: Class 6, Ch 8 "Unity in Diversity, or 'Many in the One'"
Meaning
The sari is a single unstitched length of cloth that women wrap around the body. It is worn in most parts of India. It comes in hundreds of varieties: cotton, silk and now synthetic fabrics, woven, printed and dyed in endless ways. The draping style changes from region to region and from community to community, and people still invent new styles. Travellers admired how simple and economical it is, and women use it for many tasks beyond dressing. One garment with countless local forms makes the sari a clear symbol of unity in diversity.
Example
A stone relief from Vaishali in Bihar shows a woman wearing a sari. It dates to a few centuries BCE, so the garment is very old. Famous silk varieties today include Banarasi, Kanjivaram, Paithani, Patan Patola, Muga and Mysore.
