Meaning

The Satnami revolt was a rising against Mughal officials in 1672, during Aurangzeb's reign. The Satnamis were a religious sect made up mostly of peasants and artisans, such as carpenters and goldsmiths. They lived around Narnaul, in present-day Haryana, not far from Delhi. A quarrel with a Mughal soldier grew into an armed revolt, and the rebels took control of the area for a short time. Aurangzeb sent a large army and crushed the revolt. It shows that anger against Mughal rule ran deep among ordinary working people.

Example

In 1672, Satnami rebels near Narnaul defeated local Mughal forces. They held the area until Aurangzeb's imperial army put them down after heavy fighting.
