Shravasti (Savatthi in Pali) was the capital of the kingdom of Kosala. Today it lies in Shravasti district of Uttar Pradesh. The Buddha spent many rainy seasons here, because monks stayed in one place during the monsoon. Many of his sermons are said to have been given here. It is one of the eight great places of Buddhism. Its story shows how wealthy lay supporters helped the sangha grow.
