Meaning
Sikandar Bagh, also spelled Secundra Bagh, is a walled garden in Lucknow. Nawab Wajid Ali Shah of Awadh built it as a pleasure garden. During the Revolt of 1857, rebel sepoys used it as a stronghold. It became the site of one of the bloodiest killings by British forces.
Example
In November 1857, British troops under Colin Campbell stormed Sikandar Bagh while marching to rescue the Lucknow Residency. More than 2,000 rebel sepoys were killed inside it. Felice Beato's photograph of the garden (1858) shows their skeletons left lying in the open. They were left as a warning against rebellion.
