Also called: Sindhudurg · Topic: The Marathas · NCERT: Class 8, Ch 3 "The Marathas"
Meaning
Sindhudurg is a sea fort that Shivaji built on a small island off Malvan, on the Konkan coast, near the Maharashtra–Goa border. Work on it began in 1664. It was a key naval fort for the Maratha navy, guarding the coast against European and other sea powers. It shows how Shivaji used forts both on land and at sea to defend his kingdom. Sindhudurg is now one of the forts in UNESCO's Maratha Military Landscapes World Heritage listing.
Example
In the 17th century Shivaji built Sindhudurg on an island in the sea off Malvan. From there his ships could watch the coast and protect trade from European powers such as the Portuguese at nearby Goa.
