Sivakalai iron finds

History glossary

Also called: Sivagalai · Topic: Sangam Age and Early South India · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

Sivakalai (also spelt Sivagalai) is a burial site in Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu. Iron objects were found there in burial urns, which are large clay pots used to hold the remains of the dead. In 2025, the Tamil Nadu government announced that these iron finds date to the 4th millennium BCE. If confirmed, this would make them among the oldest iron objects in India. The date is still being debated, and other scholars need to test and confirm it.

Example

Charcoal and rice found with iron objects in Sivakalai burial urns gave very early scientific dates. This led the Tamil Nadu government to claim, in 2025, that iron was used in the Tamil region far earlier than the usual date of the first millennium BCE.

Don't confuse with

  • Megalithic iron of the first millennium BCE: this is the usual textbook picture of iron in south India, with stone burials full of iron tools and weapons. Sivakalai's much earlier date is a new claim, not settled history.
