Topic: Framing the Indian Constitution · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 4 "Framing the Constitution"
Meaning
Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902) was a Hindu monk and reformer from Bengal and a disciple of Ramakrishna. He wanted Hinduism reformed. He attacked caste pride and empty ritual, and he urged service to the poor. When NCERT explains where the Constitution's ideals came from, it names him among nineteenth-century reformers. Their fight for justice and equality helped shape the ideals of democracy, equality and justice in the Constitution.
Example
In 1893 Vivekananda spoke at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago. In 1897 he founded the Ramakrishna Mission to serve the poor and the sick.
Don't confuse with
- Jyotirao Phule: another nineteenth-century reformer named in the same context. Phule directly fought caste oppression from a lower-caste position in Maharashtra. Vivekananda worked to reform Hinduism from within as a monk.
