Titu Mir revolt
Also called: Narkelberia rising · Topic: Peasant and Tribal Resistance under Company Rule · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Titu Mir revolt is also called the Narkelberia rising. It was a peasant rising near Barasat in Bengal, led by Titu Mir, whose real name was Mir Nisar Ali. He was a Muslim preacher inspired by Sayyid Ahmad of Rae Bareli. He gathered poor peasants, mostly Muslims, against Hindu zamindars and European indigo planters who oppressed them, and then against the British who backed those zamindars and planters. It matters because it joined religious reform with armed peasant resistance.
Example
Titu Mir built a bamboo fort at Narkelberia, near Barasat. In 1831 British troops attacked it with cannon and destroyed it. Titu Mir died in the fighting.
