Treaty of Madras 1769
Topic: Europeans in India and the Rise of Company Rule · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Treaty of Madras of 1769 ended the First Anglo-Mysore War (1767–1769) between Haidar Ali of Mysore and the East India Company. Neither side gained anything. Each side gave back the land it had captured. They also promised to help each other if a third power attacked. It showed that an Indian ruler could stand up to the Company.
Example
In 1769, Haidar Ali's cavalry appeared close to Madras, the Company's main base in the south. This forced the Company to agree to peace. Later, the Marathas attacked Mysore, but the British did not send help. Haidar saw this as broken faith, and it helped lead to the Second Anglo-Mysore War in 1780.
Don't confuse with
- Treaty of Mangalore (1784): it ended the Second Anglo-Mysore War and was signed with Tipu Sultan. The Treaty of Madras ended the first war and was signed with Haidar Ali.
