Treaty of Mangalore 1784
Topic: Europeans in India and the Rise of Company Rule · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Treaty of Mangalore of 1784 ended the Second Anglo-Mysore War (1780–1784) between Tipu Sultan of Mysore and the East India Company. Both sides agreed to give back the land each had captured and to free prisoners of war. Like the earlier Treaty of Madras, it ended the war without either side winning. Mysore was still a strong rival to the Company.
Example
Haidar Ali died in 1782, during the war, and his son Tipu Sultan carried on fighting. In March 1784, Tipu and the Company signed peace at Mangalore on the west coast. Each side returned its conquests. The peace did not last. In the Third Anglo-Mysore War (1790–1792), Tipu lost half his kingdom, and he was killed in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War at Seringapatam in 1799.
Don't confuse with
- Treaty of Madras (1769): it ended the First Anglo-Mysore War and was signed with Haidar Ali. The Treaty of Mangalore was signed with Tipu Sultan.
