Treaty of Salbai 1782
Topic: Europeans in India and the Rise of Company Rule · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Treaty of Salbai was signed in 1782 between the English East India Company and the Marathas. It ended the First Anglo-Maratha War (1775–82). The Maratha chief Mahadji Scindia helped bring both sides to an agreement. The treaty mostly put things back as they were before the war, and it kept peace between the Company and the Marathas for about twenty years.
Example
Under the treaty, the Company kept the island of Salsette, near Bombay. It gave up support for Raghunath Rao, who wanted to become Peshwa (chief minister of the Marathas). The young Madhavrao II was accepted as Peshwa, and Raghunath Rao was given a pension. This happened while Warren Hastings was Governor-General.
Don't confuse with
- Treaty of Bassein 1802: Peshwa Baji Rao II accepted a subsidiary alliance, which means he had to keep British troops and pay for them himself. It led to the Second Anglo-Maratha War. Salbai, by contrast, was a treaty of equals that ended a war.
