Treaty of Seringapatam 1792

History glossary

Also called: Treaty of Srirangapatna · Topic: Europeans in India and the Rise of Company Rule · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

The Treaty of Seringapatam (Srirangapatna) ended the Third Anglo-Mysore War (1790–92). Tipu Sultan of Mysore signed it with Lord Cornwallis and the Company's allies, the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Marathas. Tipu lost about half his kingdom. The treaty badly weakened Mysore, which was the strongest power in the south standing against the Company.

Example

In 1792 Cornwallis's army besieged Tipu's capital at Srirangapatna. Tipu had to give up half his land, pay a large war fine (indemnity), and hand over two of his young sons as hostages until he paid. The Company took Malabar, Dindigul and the Baramahal, and Coorg came under British protection.

Don't confuse with

  • Treaty of Mangalore 1784: it ended the Second Anglo-Mysore War. Each side simply returned the land it had captured, and Tipu lost no territory.
  • Fall of Seringapatam 1799: Tipu was killed in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War. That was a conquest, not a treaty.
