Warehouse of Mohenjo-daro
Also called: Granary · Topic: Harappan (Sindhu-Sarasvati) Civilisation · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 1 "Bricks, Beads and Bones"
Meaning
The warehouse is a huge structure on the Citadel of Mohenjo-daro. Only its lower part, made of brick, survives. The upper part was made of wood and rotted away long ago. It was earlier called a "granary" (a store for grain). It was probably used for storage on a large scale, which shows that the city had some kind of organised authority.
Example
The warehouse stands on the Citadel of Mohenjo-daro, not far from the Great Bath. Both were special buildings raised on mud-brick platforms. That is why historians link them to public use and not to private homes.
Don't confuse with
- Great Bath: The Great Bath, also on the Citadel, was a watertight tank for ritual bathing. The warehouse was meant for storage.
