Anglo-Indian nominated seats
Also called: Article 331, Article 333 · Topic: Parliament: Composition, Powers and Law-making · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
These were seats filled by nomination (being chosen, not elected) to give the Anglo-Indian community a voice. Under Article 331, the President could nominate up to two Anglo-Indians to the Lok Sabha. Under Article 333, a Governor could nominate one to the state assembly. The 104th Amendment, 2019 ended these seats from 25 January 2020.
Example
The same 104th Amendment, 2019 extended the reservation of seats for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to 2030 (Art. 334). This is why older books give the Lok Sabha 552 seats: 550 elected plus 2 Anglo-Indian nominees.
Don't confuse with
- Nominated members of the Rajya Sabha: the 12 people the President chooses for special knowledge (Art. 80(3)). They still exist. The Anglo-Indian seats have been abolished.
