Meaning

The Asian Relations Conference was a meeting of Asian countries that Jawaharlal Nehru hosted in New Delhi in March 1947. That was five months before India became independent. Its aim was to build Asian unity. It showed early on that Nehru wanted India to play a big role in Asia. It also showed that India saw its freedom struggle as part of the worldwide fight against colonial rule (rule by a foreign power).

Example

In March 1947 Nehru brought Asian leaders together in New Delhi. Two years later, in 1949, India hosted another conference to back Indonesia's fight for freedom from Dutch rule.

Don't confuse with

  • Bandung Conference: this came later (April 1955) in Indonesia. It brought together both Asian and African states and led to the Non-Aligned Movement.
