Meaning

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) is a cabinet committee, chaired by the Prime Minister, that handles the economy. It reviews economic trends and approves big economic decisions, such as minimum support prices and large investment proposals. The minimum support price (MSP) is the price at which the government promises to buy a crop from farmers. Like other cabinet committees, the CCEA is not named in the Constitution. The PM sets it up under the Rules of Business so that the full Cabinet does not have to discuss every economic file.

Example

When the government announces the minimum support prices that farmers will get for a season's crops, the decision is usually approved by the CCEA. Approval of a large public investment project is another typical CCEA decision.

Don't confuse with

  • Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA): the CCPA deals with Centre-state relations and sensitive political matters. The CCEA deals with economic decisions.
