Confucian idea of justice
Topic: Equality and Social Justice · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 4 "Social Justice"
Meaning
In ancient China, the thinker Confucius said that kings should keep justice by punishing wrongdoers and rewarding the virtuous, meaning good people. Justice here is a duty of the ruler. It is about giving each kind of conduct the response it deserves. NCERT uses this idea to show that every civilisation has thought about justice, long before modern theories.
Example
A Confucian ruler would reward an honest official and punish a corrupt one. On this view, a state that does both is a just state.
Don't confuse with
- Dharma as justice: in ancient India, justice meant keeping a just social order (dharma). Maintaining that order was the king's main duty. Confucius stressed reward and punishment by the ruler.
