Constitution Day
Also called: Samvidhan Divas · Topic: Making of the Constitution: Constituent Assembly, Sources and Salient Features · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 1 "Constitution: Why and How?"; Class 11, Ch 9 "Constitution as a Living Document"; Class 11, Ch 10 "The Philosophy of the Constitution"
Meaning
Constitution Day, or Samvidhan Divas, is observed on 26 November. It marks the day in 1949 when the Constituent Assembly adopted (finally passed) the Constitution. It was notified in 2015 by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, in the year of B.R. Ambedkar's 125th birth anniversary. Before that, 26 November was observed as National Law Day.
Example
On 26 November each year, schools and government offices hold readings of the Preamble. Events in the Constitution@75 period (2024–26) also centred on this day.
Don't confuse with
- Republic Day (26 January): marks the day in 1950 when the Constitution came fully into force. Constitution Day marks its adoption two months earlier. A common exam trap says "Constitution Day is 26 January". That is false.
