Direct election
Topic: Elections and the Electoral System · NCERT: Class 8, Ch 5 "Universal Franchise and India's Electoral System"; Class 8, Ch 6 "The Parliamentary System: Legislature and Executive"; Class 9, Ch 7 "Elections"
Meaning
In a direct election, voters choose their representatives themselves. Each voter casts a vote, and the votes decide who wins. In India this method is used for the Lok Sabha, state legislative assemblies, panchayats and municipalities. It matters because it links the representative straight to the people, who can remove that person at the next periodic election (an election held at regular, fixed intervals).
Example
In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, voters in each of the 543 constituencies picked their own Member of Parliament. In the same way, villagers vote directly for members of their panchayat.
Don't confuse with
- Indirect election: here the people's elected representatives, not the voters, choose the office-holder. Examples are the President, the Vice-President and Rajya Sabha members.
