The Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) was founded by E.V. Ramasami "Periyar" in 1944. It came out of the Justice Party and the Self-Respect Movement. It opposed Brahmin dominance and the north's political, economic and cultural control over the south. At first it claimed to speak for all of south India, but it found support only in Tamil Nadu.
Example
Its slogan was "Vadakku vaazhgiradhu; therkku thaeikiradhu", meaning "the north thrives, the south decays". In 1949 C.N. Annadurai broke away from the DK and formed the DMK.
