Global citizenship
Topic: Citizenship: Idea and Indian Law · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 6 "Citizenship"
Meaning
Global citizenship is the idea that people are linked to one another across national borders. It encourages people to act together on problems that no single country can solve alone. NCERT's view is that only national governments can fix most inequalities. So global citizenship adds to national citizenship but cannot replace it.
Example
After the 2004 tsunami, people across the world sent help to the affected countries, including India. Countries also cooperated to fight the spread of bird flu.
Don't confuse with
- Universal citizenship: this is the ideal that everyone who lives and works in a country should be able to become a member of it. Global citizenship is about links across borders.
- Global Citizenship Education: this is a UNESCO programme, linked to SDG target 4.7, that teaches the values and skills needed for just and peaceful societies.
