Global Gender Gap Index

Polity & Governance glossary

Topic: Gender, Religion and Caste in Politics · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

The Global Gender Gap Index measures how close men and women are to equality in each country. The World Economic Forum (WEF) has published it every year since 2006. It has four sub-indices (smaller scores that add up to the total): economic participation, education, health and survival, and political empowerment. A higher score means a smaller gap between men and women.

Example

In 2025 India ranked 131 out of 148 countries. India scores lowest on economic participation and political empowerment, which reflects few women in paid jobs and in legislatures.

Don't confuse with

  • Gender Inequality Index (GII): the GII is published by UNDP, not the WEF. It is a separate index with its own method.
