Meaning

Greater Nagalim is the demand to unite all Naga-inhabited areas into one unit. That would include parts of Nagaland, Manipur, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Myanmar. The NSCN (Isak-Muivah), the main Naga armed group in peace talks, presses this demand. It matters because it clashes with the borders of other states, which strongly oppose it.

Example

The Naga Framework Agreement (3 August 2015) with the NSCN (I-M) set out the basis for a final peace settlement. That settlement is still awaited. The demand for Greater Nagalim, along with a separate Naga flag and constitution, is one of the main sticking points.

Don't confuse with

  • Nagaland statehood (1963): this created a state within India's existing borders, with Art. 371A protecting Naga customs. Greater Nagalim seeks to merge Naga areas across several states and Myanmar.
