Indo-Pakistan War of 1965
Topic: India's External Relations, 1947-1999: Non-alignment, Wars and Nuclear Policy · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 4 "India's External Relations"
Meaning
The Indo-Pakistan War of 1965 was fought when Lal Bahadur Shastri was Prime Minister. Pakistan first attacked in the Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, in April 1965. In August and September it began a bigger offensive in Jammu and Kashmir, hoping local people would help. They did not. The war ended with a UN-backed ceasefire on 23 September 1965. It hurt an already weak economy.
Example
To ease pressure on Kashmir, Shastri opened a counter-attack on the Punjab front, and the Indian army reached close to Lahore. The Tashkent Agreement (10 January 1966), brokered by the Soviet Union, sent both armies back to their pre-war positions. Shastri died in Tashkent the next day.
Don't confuse with
- Rann of Kutch tribunal: the Kutch part of the dispute was settled separately by an international tribunal in 1968, not at Tashkent.
