Inter-operable Criminal Justice System

Meaning

The Inter-operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) is a digital platform. It links the main parts of the criminal justice system: police (through CCTNS, the police's online crime and criminal records network), courts, prisons, forensic laboratories and prosecution. Data entered once can then pass from one part to the next without being typed in again. This saves time, cuts errors and helps to track a case from FIR to judgment. It supports the technology-based approach of the new criminal laws of 2023.

Example

Say police register an FIR and upload it to CCTNS. Through ICJS, the court, the prosecutor and later the prison can see the same case record. Forensic reports can also be shared digitally, which matters because forensics is now compulsory for offences punishable with 7 years or more.

Don't confuse with

  • National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG): an online database of pending and disposed cases in each court. It covers courts only. ICJS links police, courts, prisons, forensics and prosecution.
