Lack of meaningful choice

Polity & Governance glossary

Topic: Political Parties, Party Systems and Anti-defection · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 4 "Political Parties"

Meaning

Lack of meaningful choice is one of the four challenges facing political parties in the Class 10 textbook. Major parties differ very little in ideology, especially on economic policy. The same leaders also keep switching from one party to another. As a result, voters have many parties to pick from but no real alternative.

Example

If all the major parties support broadly the same economic policies, a voter who wants a different approach has no party to vote for. When leaders change parties just before an election, voters find it even harder to see what each party stands for.

Don't confuse with

  • One-party system: there, only one party is legally allowed to rule. Lack of meaningful choice happens even where many parties compete freely, because those parties offer similar programmes.
