Meaning

Lakhpati Didi is a central government initiative for women in self-help groups (SHGs), which are small savings-and-loan groups of mostly poor women. It aims to help each woman earn at least ₹1 lakh a year, and to keep earning it year after year rather than once. It builds on the SHG network formed under DAY-NRLM, the Ministry of Rural Development's mission to bring poor rural women into SHGs. It shifts the focus from just getting women into groups to raising what they actually earn.

Example

In 2024 the target was raised to 3 crore women. One example is an SHG member in a village who borrows through her group to start a small dairy or tailoring unit. If that brings her steady income above ₹1 lakh a year, she counts as a "Lakhpati Didi".

Don't confuse with

  • DAY-NRLM: this is the wider mission, launched in 2011, that organises poor rural women into SHGs and federations. Lakhpati Didi is one income goal set for those women.
